‘Sustained harassment by creditors’: What 'drove' Bengaluru family to deadly suicide bid; 2 dead, 2 critical

BENGALURU: A Bengaluru family’s desperation over mounting debts likely drove them to a deadly suicide attempt, officials said on Sunday. Four members were involved in the incident, two of whom died, while the remaining two are fighting for their lives in hospital. The incident occurred between 10 pm and 10:30 pm on Saturday at the family’s home in Mallenahalli near Attibele in Anekal taluk. Relatives alleged that persistent harassment by creditors may have compelled the family to take this extreme step. The deceased have been identified as Asha (55) and her daughter Varshitha (32), who reportedly died on the spot. The other two family members, Mohan MR (26) and his 11-year-old nephew Mayank, were found critically injured and rushed to a private hospital in Attibele, where they are currently undergoing treatment.Video Message Reveals Family’s DistressPolice said the family had recorded a video before the incident, stating they were unable to bear the pressure from lenders and were planning to take the extreme step. The video was shared with relatives prior to the tragedy.Neighbours, who reportedly heard distressing sounds from the house, gathered at the scene and found the main door locked from inside. Breaking it open, they discovered Asha and Varshitha dead, while Mohan and Mayank were screaming in pain. The injured were immediately rushed to the hospital, and the police were alerted. Relatives, alarmed by the video, also reached the house and confirmed that Asha and Varshitha were unresponsive.Financial Stress And Health Struggles Preliminary investigation suggests that Mohan, who was involved in a chit fund business and overwhelmed by financial distress, may have attacked Asha, Varshitha, and Mayank with a knife, slitting their throats before attempting to take his own life in a similar manner.Police said both survivors sustained severe injuries and are undergoing emergency medical care.Further inquiries revealed that Varshitha had been battling a brain tumour for over a year and a half and was reportedly in critical condition. The family had accumulated significant debt for her treatment, compounded by losses in the chit fund business, which may have added to their distress.A case has been registered at Attibele police station in Bengaluru Rural district, and further investigation is ongoing.
