Emma Raducanu is once again in the spotlight, but this time it is not about a big win. It is about her constant coaching changes. The 2021 US Open champion has worked with many coaches in a short time, and that pattern has raised fresh questions about her progress. Now, tennis legend Martina Navratilova has stepped in with a clear message. Speaking to Sky Sports during the Miami Open, Navratilova said Raducanu needs to choose carefully and stay with one coach longer. Her words come at a time when Raducanu’s form has been up and down, and injuries have also slowed her down this season.

Martina Navratilova urges Emma Raducanu to stay patient with one coach and build stability

Martina Navratilova did not hold back, but her tone stayed calm and helpful. She pointed out that changing coaches too often makes it hard to grow.“I mean, I don’t know what’s the record for a coach- maybe six months! So, I wish that she would really pick whoever she wants to be her coach carefully and then stick with it,” Navratilova said. She also explained why time matters in a player-coach relationship.“Give it a year because it takes a while to be comfortable with making changes and being able to incorporate the person into your game. The biggest thing I see, I think she could get fitter, which the coach has nothing to do with, but you know, the coach can only do so much. Pick the right coach and stick with him or her, please!”Emma Raducanu’s recent numbers show the struggle. She has a 7-7 record this year. She lost in the Round of 32 at Indian Wells to Amanda Anisimova and then pulled out of the Miami Open due to a lower back injury and illness. Her last full-time coach, Francisco Roig, left after the Australian Open. He is now working with Iga Swiatek. Before him, Emma Raducanu had already worked with several names, including Andrew Richardson, who guided her to the US Open title, along with others like Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunov.

Emma Raducanu explains her side as she avoids long-term coach commitment and focuses on her natural game

Emma Raducanu has a different view. She says finding one perfect coach is not simple and comes with pressure.“I don’t necessarily want to have one coach in the role because anyone I bring in is straight away going to be scrutinised- even if it’s a trial. I might feel the pressure to stick with them, even if it’s not necessarily the right decision,” she told BBC Sport. She also shared that too many voices have affected her style.“I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn’t necessarily fit. I want to come back to my natural way of playing. That takes time to relearn because that’s something that has been coached out of me a little bit.”Right now, she is working without a full-time coach, alongside her hitting partner Alexis Canter and physio Emma Stewart. There are signs of progress. Her ranking has improved over the past two years, and in 2025 she had a solid run with deep results in Washington and Miami. In early 2026, she reached the final in Cluj-Napoca, showing she is moving in the right direction. Still, her career sits at an important point. The next steps, especially her coaching choice, could shape what comes next.
