Puducherry polls: Rahul Gandhi promises full statehood for UT if Congress wins

NEW DELHI: Congress MP and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday vowed that Puducherry will be granted full statehood if his party comes to power. Addressing an election rally at Lawspet, he said, “We are committed to giving full statehood to Puducherry.”Rahul Gandhi alleged that the current Union Territory government does not reflect the will of the people but is imposed from Delhi. He accused the BJP of sidelining regional leaders and running the UT by remote control.“Everybody knows that there is 30% commission taken on all contracts. The government here has become a collection agent. Government in Puducherry is not an expression of people, but imposed from Delhi; BJP running state by ‘remote control’,” he said.Highlighting Congress’ promises for the UT, he added, “What is the Congress alliance government going to do for Puducherry? We are going to give Rs 2,000 monthly support to unemployed youngsters, create 30,000 new jobs in public and private sectors, and women will travel for free in Puducherry buses. We are going to relax the entry into government jobs till the age of 40. Every single family in Puducherry will have healthcare insurance of Rs 20 lakh available to them.”Rahul Gandhi urged voters to support Congress and its alliance candidates, promising a government that truly represents the voice of the local people.“You show me tremendous affection whenever I come, wherever I go,” he said, addressing the public. The Puducherry assembly election will be held for 30 seats, with polling in a single phase on April 9 and counting of votes on May 4.
