BHOPAL: A BJP corporator was shot dead in broad daylight in Datia on Tuesday morning, triggering panic in the area and raising fresh concerns over law and order in the region.The incident took place around 8:30 am at Sevda Chungi square under Kotwali police station limits, where Ward No 01 corporator Kallu Kushwaha was gunned down by unidentified assailants. According to initial information, the attackers opened fire at close range, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene.The brazen attack in a busy part of the city led to chaos, with a large number of people gathering at the spot soon after the incident. Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, while launching a search operation to trace the accused. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined as part of the investigation.Preliminary findings suggest that the murder may have stemmed from personal enmity. Police sources said the deceased had a criminal background and recently came out on bail after serving a life sentence in a murder case. Investigators are now probing his past disputes and links to identify possible suspects.Superintendent of Police Suraj Verma told TOI, “The corporator who was shot dead had enmity with several persons. He was recently out of jail after serving a life term. The process to remove him from the post of corporator was underway as he was convicted last year, but the process was yet to be completed. Post-mortem is yet to be done, but primarily it is apparent that he has two bullet injuries. A few suspects have been rounded up as investigations are on.“The body has been sent for post-mortem, and a case has been registered against unidentified persons. Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the killing.
