Apple has now removed BitChat, the Bluetooth-based messaging app created by Block CEO Jack Dorsey, from China’s App Store following orders from the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). Dorsey revealed this move of Apple on April 5, posting Apple’s notification that the app was taken down after authorities alleged it contained ‘illegal’ content.

Apple’s message to developers

In its communication to Dorsey, Apple emphasised that apps must comply with local laws wherever they are distributed. “We are writing to notify you that your application, per demand from the CAC (Cyberspace Administration of China), will be removed from the China App Store because it includes content that is illegal in China, which is not in compliance with the App Review Guidelines:5. LegalApps must comply with all legal requirements in any location where you make them available (if you’re not sure, check with a lawyer). We know this stuff is complicated, but it is your responsibility to understand and make sure your app conforms with all local laws, not just the guidelines below. And of course, apps that solicit, promote, or encourage criminal or clearly reckless behavior will be rejected.According to the CAC, your app violates Articles 3 of the Provisions on the Security Assessment of Internet-basedInformation Services with Attribute of Public Opinions or Capable of Social Mobilization. If you need additional information regarding this removal or the laws and requirements in China, we encourage you to reach out directly to the CAC (Cyberspace Administration of China).While your app has been removed from the China App Store, it is still available in the App Stores for the other territories you selected in App Store Connect. Apple’s position in China

The removal comes amid heightened regulatory pressure in Apple’s second-largest market. Earlier this month, Apple reduced App Store fees for developers in China, a move seen as part of its broader effort to navigate increasing scrutiny from regulators.

What makes Bitchat different

Launched last year, Bitchat is a messaging app that operates without internet connectivity, relying instead on Bluetooth connections within a 30-meter range. Messages are ephemeral, stored only on devices rather than centralized servers, and bridge nodes can link clusters of users.
