Govt moves Supreme Court for clubbing all pleas on online gaming law

NEW DELHI: Centre Thursday moved SC requesting it to call to itself the three writ petitions filed in as many high courts challenging the constitutional validity of Parliament-enacted ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act’, which came into force after receiving Presidential assent on Aug 22.“Due to multiple litigations pending before various HCs involving same or substantially similar questions of law and challenging the vires of the Act, it is imperative that these are transferred to SC or to any HC to avoid divergence of opinions or multiplicity of proceedings,” Centre said.Within a week of the Act regulating online gaming applications, Head Digital Works challenged its validity before Karnataka HC. On the same day on Aug 28, another online platform ‘Bagheera Carrom’ moved Delhi HC with a similar challenge and next day ‘Clubboom 11 Sports and Entertainment’ filed a petition before MP HC challenging the Act.
