Wild elephants kill Assam duo out for a walk

GUWAHATI: Morning walk turned tragic for two villagers on Sunday as the duo was trampled to death by two wild elephants in Goalbil area in Assam’s Baksa district, along the Assam-Bhutan border, reports Kangkan Kalita.Locals said the deceased Babita Das, 52, and Lohit Das, 65 had gone out for a walk and were roaming near their homes when the elephants attacked. “Perhaps, the two elephants, separated from a herd, arrived in the village on Saturday night and encountered the two villagers in the morning,” a forest officer said. Villagers alleged that electric fencing, erected by the forest department, failed to prevent wild elephants from entering villages close to the Pagladia river.“There is no security. Elephants come, destroy paddy and kill people,” Alakananda Das, a villager, said.
