OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi to discuss closer cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) research and its application. As reported by the UAE state news agency WAM, the meeting at Qasr Al Shati focused on aligning OpenAI’s work with the UAE’s plan to build a strong AI ecosystem. The country aims to support its development goals, foster a knowledge-based economy, and enhance its global standing in AI. Altman praised the UAE’s AI vision and its international collaborations.In recognition of his role in advancing AI, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) awarded Altman its first honorary doctorate. The award highlights his significant influence in advancing AI and supporting innovation across research, technology, and business. Based in Abu Dhabi, MBZUAI is the world’s first graduate-level AI research university, dedicated to building international talent and leadership in the field.

How UAE is planning to use AI to grow its economy

The UAE is heavily investing in AI to position itself as a global hub and reduce reliance on oil. Its long-term vision is to build an innovation-driven, knowledge-based economy with AI at its core. Key priorities include supporting local AI research, encouraging collaboration between the government and private sectors, and building global partnerships to access advanced technologies.A significant step in this strategy is the development of one of the world’s largest AI data centres, which will serve as a backbone for AI growth across industries. The UAE is also using AI to modernise and preserve the Arabic language by creating digital dictionaries, linguistic analysis tools, and region-specific language models, ensuring Arabic maintains a strong digital presence.On the international front, the UAE is strengthening ties with the US, having recently announced a large joint AI campus in Abu Dhabi during US President Donald Trump’s visit in May, highlighting both technological and diplomatic cooperation.
