ROHTAK: A man from Panipat who married against his in-laws’ wishes was brutally assaulted in Ganaur, Sonipat, allegedly by his wife’s father, uncle, and their associates. The victim, identified as Kunal, 25, is undergoing treatment at PGIMS Khanpur in Sonipat.

Haryana Man Assaulted Over Rs 30k Maintenance Demand on Rs 12k Salary

Police said the assault was triggered after Kunal posted photographs of his marriage with his wife, Komal Goswami, on social media. Komal’s family, who had allegedly arranged her second marriage in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, strongly objected to the posts. Kunal and Komal had married on 26 June 2024 at Rohini Court, Delhi, despite opposition from her family. After living together for a few months, Komal allegedly left her matrimonial home and later lodged a complaint of assault against Kunal, demanding Rs 30,000 per month in maintenance—far beyond his Rs 12,000 salary. Meanwhile, Komal’s family reportedly solemnised her second marriage. The matter is currently sub judice, with the next hearing scheduled for 25 October 2025. Recounting the attack, Kunal said that on 24 September, while returning with his father on a motorcycle from Ganaur, a group of four to five men stopped them near Badshahi Road, Sonipat. The assailants attacked him with sticks and sharp weapons, while his wife’s father, Satish, and uncle, Rakesh, allegedly oversaw the assault. The attack left Kunal with multiple fractures and serious injuries. Police spokesperson Ravindra Kumar confirmed the incident, saying: “The victim has alleged that his wife’s family wanted him to remove photographs and videos of their wedding from social media. When he refused, they carried out a murderous assault. Based on the father’s complaint, an FIR has been registered against the woman’s father, uncle, and several others.” A case has been lodged under Sections 110, 115(2), 126(2), 191(3), 190, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have launched an investigation and assured strict action will be taken against the accused.
