IPS officer ‘suicide’ case: Senior officer OP Singh appointed new Haryana DGP

CHANDIGARH: Senior IPS officer OP Singh has been appointed as the new director general of police (DGP) of Haryana. A 1992-batch IPS officer, Singh will hold the position as an additional charge after the incumbent DGP, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, was sent on leave following a controversy surrounding the suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Om Prakash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave period of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur,” stated an order issued by Sumita Mishra Singh, additional chief secretary (Home), Haryana.Singh is presently posted as managing director, Haryana police Housing Corporation Panchkula, DGP Haryana Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) and director of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Madhuban.

In his over 32 years in police forces, Singh has served as SP in five districts, as police commissioner of Ambala-Panchkula, Faridabad and inspector general of Rewari and Hisar Range police.He played a key role in framing the Rules of Prevention of Money Laundering Act during his four-year stint from 2004-7 in the Union Finance Ministry. He is credited with having registered and investigated first-ever case under India’s anti-money laundering law.As director of Haryana’s sports department from 2008-12, he devised and implemented the PIE (Participation, Inclusion & Excellence) Model of sports promotion in the state. His SPAT Sports Scholarship Program under ‘Play for India’ campaign line attracted over a million children to playgrounds across the state of Haryana.He is also the recipient of the President Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2008 and Indian President Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2017.
