Infiltration bid foiled along LoC, 2 killed

SRINAGAR: Security forces Tuesday foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district’s Keran sector, about 130km from Srinagar, and gunned down two terrorists. A large cache of weapons and equipment was seized from the site of the encounter. On October 13 evening, a joint team of the Army and J&K Police had launched an anti-terror operation in Machhal sector based on intelligence inputs “corroborated by sources and agencies” regarding a possible infiltration attempt, the Army said in a statement.Alert personnel spotted suspicious activity and challenged the infiltrators, who opened indiscriminate fire at the forces, the Army said. “Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists,” it added.Officials said efforts were on to retrieve the bodies of the infiltrators, which were spotted lying close to the LoC. The area was being combed, and a massive cordon-and-search operation was underway, the Army stated.Meanwhile, J&K Police carried out extensive searches across multiple locations in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The premises raided included the houses of former Hurriyat activists and those previously associated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami organisation.
