KOLKATA: A 15-year-old girl who had come to the OPD of the state-run SSKM Hospital for a check-up on Wednesday afternoon was lured into a hospital washroom and molested by a 34-year-old man who claimed to be a ward boy at the NRS Hospital. The incident took place in the ground-floor washroom of the Trauma Care Centre (TCC) building, which is around 200 meters from the OPD building. Late on Wednesday, police arrested accused Amit Mullick from his home in Dhapa’s Mallikpara.Mullick told cops he knew the layout of SSKM Hospital very well since he had earlier worked at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital and Kolkata Police Hospital, both of which are run by SSKM, and would often visit this hospital. But detailed checks at both Sambhunath Pandit and Kolkata Police Hospital indicated they had no staffer by this name or description in the past two years. The private agency, ERS, which supplies ward boys and security guards to SSKM has till now found none matching Mullick’s description in their HR records.According to the police complaint, the survivor – a resident of South 24 Parganas – had come to SSKM with her parents at around 1 pm. She was waiting for her parents, who had gone to the OPD ticket counter to fill up the doctor visitation forms, when Mullick approached her and asked her to accompany him. “He was in a green uniform and the girl probably thought he was a doctor or a ward boy,” a hospital official said.Mullick took the girl to the adjoining building and forced her into the washroom attached to the CT scan and MRI units. The girl’s mother raised an alarm when she could not find her and a frantic search by hospital staffers led them to the TCC building, but Mullick had slipped out by then. Hospital officials immediately scanned CCTV footage from the ground-floor of the building and spotted Mullick walking with the minor. The footage was handed over to police, who tracked him down to his Dhapa home at night and booked him under Pocso.Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar said, “Bhowanipore police station has recorded the survivor’s statement. The accused says he is a former Group D staff of Sambhunath Pandit hospital. Further investigation is on”Hospital sources said Mullick’s statement appears to be, prima facie, misleading. “There are no available records either at Sambhunath Pandit or Kolkata Police hospital that Mullick worked there,” a senior hospital official said.
