Mumbai rains: Landslide in Vikhroli kills 2; IMD issues red alert for city

MUMBAI: Two people have died and two others were injured after a landslide struck a hut in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area in the early hours of Saturday. The incident took place around 2.39am in Jankalyan Society, Varsha Nagar, when soil and stones from a hillside collapsed onto the structure, officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) said.The hut, built on collector-owned land in a landslide-prone locality, was buried under debris. Rescue workers pulled four people from the rubble and rushed them to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital. Shalu Mishra, 19, and Suresh Mishra, 50, were declared dead on arrival.Two others, Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20, are being treated in the trauma ward and are reported to be in a stable condition.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its forecast and issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district for Saturday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
