Mumbai rains: Triple-digit showers drench city; IMD maintains orange alert till Tuesday

MUMBAI: The wet spell continued across the city on Sunday, with several locations logging triple-digit rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained its orange alert for Mumbai and Thane through Aug 19, warning of heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places. A yellow alert, indicating heavy rainfall at a few locations, was issued for Aug 20.

The Santacruz observatory recorded 85 mm of rainfall, while Colaba received 55 mm. Data from the city’s automatic weather stations (AWS) showed sharp variations across neighbourhoods. In south Mumbai, Fort logged 134 mm, Cotton Green 145 mm, Grant Road 121 mm, and Lower Parel 129 mm of rain. In the eastern suburbs, Parel recorded 134 mm, Vikhroli and Bhandup 135 mm each, while Ghatkopar and Vikhroli’s Tagore Nagar registered 124 mm. The western suburbs witnessed heavier showers-Kandivli reported 150 mm, Borivli 92 mm, while Dahisar topped the charts with 188 mm.Also See: Mumbai Heavy Rain The total rainfall recorded for this season has now crossed 1,000 mm for both IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories. By August 17, the total rainfall recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory was 1,257 mm, and the Santacruz observatory was 1,764 mm.The water stock in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai stood at 93.20%, while in 2024, the stock stood at 83.45%. The BMC’s data shows that of the seven lakes, Tulsi is 100% full, followed by Tansa 98.45%, Middle Vaitarna 97.17%, Vihar lake 89.92%, Bhatsa 89.23%, Modak Sagar 87.28% and Upper Vaitarna 86.48%.
