Madurai live-in row: Woman’s father runs over couple on bike; man killed, daughter injured

MADURAI: A couple on a bike were allegedly run over by the woman’s father in a car, killing the man in Madurai district on Saturday night, police said on Sunday. They have arrested the father of the woman, who is hospitalised with injuries.Police said Raghavi, 24, was in a live-in relationship with a relative Sathish Kumar, 21, after her husband’s death three years ago, but her family did not approve of it. Last month, the couple had eloped to Trichy, but Raghavi returned home after her family promised to get them married in some time. On Saturday, Kumar came to pick Raghavi up from her home as she told him her family had confined her to the house. But, as Raghavi’s family accused them of stealing gold jewellery, all of them went to the Melur police station. Police conducted an inquiry but it was inconclusive.Raghavi and Kumar then left for Trichy on his two-wheeler. Raghavi’s family members, who followed the couple, ran over them with a car on the highway near Melur, police said. Kumar died on the spot while Raghavi was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital. Her condition was stable.Police arrested Raghavi’s father, Alagar, 58, in connection with the case on Sunday charging him with planning the murder with Raghavi’s brother, Rahul. Police are on the lookout for several more suspects.
