Kyrie Irving injury update: Star guard moves closer to key moment as Dallas Mavericks await next move
Kyrie Irving is astonishingly bouncing back from his ACL injury, showing signs of rapid recovery ahead of expectations. Whispers around the league indicate he might be hitting the court as early as late January or just in time for the All-Star festivities, with some insiders even suggesting he possesses the skills to compete in the playoffs today.

Nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who has been sidelined since tearing his ACL in March, has given the Dallas Mavericks a significant injury update. This season, Irving has not yet made his Dallas Mavericks debut. The nine-time All-Star’s left knee ACL tear is still healing. Before the Mavs shut him down in March, Irving was only able to play in 50 games the previous season. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 24.7 points on 47.3% shooting, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game prior to his season-ending injury. He also made 2.9 triples on a 40.1% clip.

Kyrie Irving’s steady recovery sparks fresh questions for Dallas as his return window comes into focus

Irving is currently putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes to regain full strength. On Monday, a major update on his recovery process surfaced, which would pose a serious problem for Irving and the Mavericks. He turned down his Dallas player option for the 2025–2026 campaign in favour of a new contract. During the offseason, the three-time All-NBA guard agreed to a three-year, $119 million contract extension that will keep him with the franchise through 2028. Meanwhile, senior NBA writer Marc J. Spears provided a significant update on Irving’s development on Monday. He is reportedly getting closer to making his Mavs season debut, according to Spears. He then said: “Kyrie’s looking good, he’s ahead of schedule.. He’s working out with the purpose of playing this season.”Irving might potentially make his season debut by late January or around the All-Star break in mid-February, according to Spears. He further said: “Someone close to him told me that if it were the playoffs, he could play right now… That’s [how] ahead of schedule he is.”However, the Mavs may have to make a big choice as a result of this most recent Irving development. Spears said that by the time their star guard is ready to return, the team may have a problem. He continued: “I think by the time he’s able to potentially come back in late-January, there’s going to be a collective decision from him, from the team, from everybody that’s close to him on whether it’s worth it for him to come back or not…” Irving has been making progress towards his return to full basketball action in recent weeks, as evidenced by his workouts and shooting drills. Meanwhile the Mavericks have so far avoided setting a firm return date, but the timeline is starting to take shape. Also read: NBA star D’Angelo Russell slammed by Bill Simmons, defended fiercely by Kyrie Irving in fiery exchange
