Bengaluru: Airport café staff booked over worm in food, youth alleges false extortion case

BENGALURU: A 19-year-old youth has filed a complaint against a restaurant at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) five months after allegedly finding a worm in the food served to him. He has also accused the establishment of falsely implicating him in an extortion case soon after the incident.According to the complaint, the youth and his friends were travelling from Bengaluru to Guwahati on July 24 when they stopped at the airport café for breakfast. After ordering pongal and coffee, he reportedly discovered a worm in the food and alerted the staff. Although they offered to replace the dish, he declined and left for his flight without creating any disturbance. Other customers recorded videos and photos of the incident. The next day, the café lodged a complaint alleging that the youth had demanded Rs 25 lakh in compensation. He claimed he came to know of the extortion allegation against him only through news reports and maintained that he was already onboard the flight at the time mentioned in the accusation. He denied demanding money or having any links with the phone numbers referred to in the restaurant’s complaint. The restaurant had in July dismissed the worm-in-the-food’ allegation, stating that it was a case of staged act with malicious intent to extort money and malign the brand. Meanwhile, police said they found no evidence of extortion by the youth. Following the youth’s complaint, a case has been registered against the restaurant’s staff and management for food adulteration, false evidence, conspiracy, and causing harm.
