Man at wheel of Merc that killed chef and injured two others in south Delhi gets bail

New Delhi: The driver of the Mercedes G-63, who killed a chef and injured two others, was granted bail on Sunday. A senior police officer said the sections under which the driver, Shivam Arora, a software engineer, was booked were bailable.“We have also questioned his brother, who was inside the car at the time of the incident, about the sequence of events and Arora’s friend, the owner of the vehicle, has also been examined,” police said.He was booked under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) and 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of BNS.The postmortem of the deceased, Rohit, was conducted on Monday after his family arrived in Delhi. The body was then taken to his native place in Uttarakhand. His devastated father, Yashwant Singh Bisht, told TOI on Monday that the family had finalised a match and planned to formalise the engagement during Rohit’s visit.“My wife has been bedridden for several years due to illness. Rohit was our only earning member. When we last spoke on Nov 27, he said he would come home with his younger brother, who works in Ahmedabad, in the first week of Jan. Now our entire life is shattered.”He added that the family is demanding strict action against the accused. “Our son is no more, but the accused shouldn’t be spared. We also urge the govt to provide suitable compensation as we don’t know how we will survive now that our sole breadwinner is gone,” Yashwant said. The FIR was registered based on a complaint by Lalit, who told the police that he, Rohit and Kapil finished their duty and left for home around 2am on Sunday. As they approached a bus stop on Nelson Mandela Marg, at around 2.15am, a black car being driven recklessly at high speed came towards them. The car struck all three with great force, dragging Rohit and Kapil along. The vehicle eventually collided with an iron pole and came to a stop after flipping.(With inputs from Kalyan Das in Dehradun)
