NEW DELHI: Sarfaraz Khan signed off 2025 with a 75-ball 157 that included 14 sixes as Mumbai moved closer to the knockout stage with an 87-run win over Goa in a Group C match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday.Sarfaraz, who was also among the runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, brought up a century off 56 balls, his third hundred in List A cricket. Mumbai piled up 444 for 8 and then limited Goa to 357 for 9.The win was Mumbai’s fourth in a row in the group stage. One more victory from their remaining three matches is expected to be enough to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to action after missing the opening week of the National One Day Championship due to gastritis and scored 46. The focus, however, remained on Sarfaraz, who dominated the Goa bowling at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya ground, hitting nine fours and 14 sixes.Ten of those sixes came off spinners Lalit Yadav (2/93 in nine overs) and Darshan Misal (3/98 in nine overs). Sarfaraz struck four sixes off Lalit and six off Misal. Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun was also taken on, conceding 78 runs in eight overs.Sarfaraz was dismissed in the 42nd over when he was on course for a double hundred in List A cricket. Mumbai maintained the scoring rate, collecting over 100 runs in the final eight overs.Musheer Khan made 60 off 66 balls, wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore scored 53 off 28 balls, while Shams Mulani (22 off 15 balls), Tanush Kotian (23 not out off 12 balls) and captain Shardul Thakur (27 off eight balls) added quick runs. Mumbai finished with 35 fours and 25 sixes.Goa were never in control of the chase, though Lalit Yadav (64), Abhinav Tejrana (100) and Deepraj Gaonkar (70) contributed during the middle overs.Shardul Thakur led the bowling with 3 for 20 in six overs. Jaiswal bowled leg-breaks, conceding 52 runs in three overs, and picked up two wickets.
