Kashmir landslide horror: Massive rocks crash onto NH-1 near Baramulla; video shows motorists running for cover

SRINAGAR: A massive landslide on Friday morning disrupted traffic on the Srinagar–Baramulla–Uri highway, officials said.The landslide occurred on the Baramulla stretch of NH-1. A video shared by news agency PTI showed huge rocks and mounds of soil crashing down the mountainside as motorists scramble for cover.The Kashmir Valley is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave with dense fog across several areas, while the higher reaches continue to receive heavy snowfall.The region is in the middle of Chilla-e-Kalan — a 40-day period marked by intense winter conditions during which night temperatures often plunge well below freezing.Minimum temperatures dropped further on Thursday night due to clear skies, even as the meteorological department forecast largely dry weather in the coming days.Tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, along with several higher reaches, received fresh snowfall on Wednesday night.Despite the snowfall, clear skies led to a dip in temperatures across the Valley. Srinagar — the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir — woke up to a sunny morning.The city recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1°C, down from 2.2°C the previous night, officials added.(With agency inputs)
