'Kidnapped, strangled': 6-yr-old girl raped in Bengaluru; dispute with victim's mother led to murder, accused arrested

BENGALURU: The medical examination of the six-year-old found murdered last week has confirmed that she was raped before being strangled to death. The ghastly incident came to light last Tuesday when her father, a rag picker, filed a missing person complaint with Whitefield police station. The same night, police recovered her body from a drain near a temple in Nallurahalli. Launching a manhunt for the killer, police traced the suspect and their neighbour, Yusuf Khan (35), to a train and detained him when it stopped at Cuttack railway station. He was brought to the city and arrested on the charge of murder. “Now, we will add a rape charge under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) to the case and proceed with the investigation,” a senior police officer told TOI.Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s mother and Khan regularly fought over domestic issues and also had a professional rivalry. “Their fights included matters like fetching drinking water, storing scrap materials outside their tiny houses, and so on. Enraged by the fights and filled with rivalry, the accused kidnapped the victim, raped her, and strangled her to death before fleeing the city,” an investigating officer said. (The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
