CBSE circular on International Writing competition

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a circular asking its affiliated schools to take part in the 55th edition of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People. The competition, to be held in 2026, is being organised by the Department of Posts and invites students to engage with a theme that is both timely and deeply personal. CBSE has asked schools to share the details with students and organise the competition at the school level.

A theme rooted in today’s reality

This year’s theme asks students to write a letter to a friend explaining why human connection matters in a digital world. At a time when communication is increasingly shaped by screens and social media, the topic pushes students to pause and reflect on the value of real emotional bonds. The idea is not just to test writing skills, but to encourage thoughtful expression and honest reflection.

What the competition aims to achieve

According to the CBSE circular, the competition is meant to nurture creativity and strengthen writing and composition skills among young people. It also aims to develop depth of thought while promoting international friendship and understanding.Through the simple act of letter writing, students are encouraged to express emotions, ideas, and perspectives in a structured and meaningful way.

How the international selection works

The competition is coordinated globally by the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union. Each member country sends its best national entry to the international stage. From these entries, the UPU selects three winners, who are awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. They also receive certificates and additional prizes. The Gold Medal winner may be offered a visit to the UPU Headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or an alternative prize, depending on the UPU’s decision. Special mention certificates are also awarded to select participants.

Selection and prizes in India

In India, the Department of Posts will conduct the competition at both the Circle and National levels. The best three entries at each level will receive cash prizes and certificates. The highest-ranking national entry will be sent as the official submission of India to the International Competition of UPU, providing students a wonderful opportunity to represent their country on a world platform.

Language options for students

Students have the option of writing their letters in English or any language included in the Govt. of India’s Constitution, 8th Schedule. This not only broadens the participation but also enables students to express their thoughts in a language that they know best. Detailed rules and guidelines are covered in the annexures accompanying the circular.

What CBSE schools need to do

CBSE has asked schools to organise the competition in coordination with Nodal Officers from their respective circles or regions. The list of Nodal Officers will be shared separately and will also be available on the India Post website. Schools have been encouraged to actively inform students and motivate them to participate.Candidates can click on the link provided here to download the official notice of CBSE for the International Letter Writing competition.
