Mamata Banerjee vs EC: Supreme Court hearing to begin on SIR

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday morning reached the Supreme Court to argue her legal battle against the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, an exercise, being conducted by the Election Commission.A Supreme Court bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymala Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi will hear the matter.Mamata on Wednesday morning left the residence of party colleague and nephew Abhishek Banerjee to reach the Supreme Court.The West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo has been locked in a prolonged standoff with the Election Commission over the SIR exercise.Earlier this week, Mamata travelled to New Delhi to register her objections to the revision exercise and met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to a source quoted by news agency ANI, Mamata “raised false allegations, misbehaved, thumped the table and left”, leading to the abrupt end of the meeting.Ahead of the meeting, Mamata also had a face-off with Delhi Police personnel outside Banga Bhawan in Chanakyapuri.Mamata also recounted her Monday meeting with the CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that she was “humiliated” during the meeting.
