At 57.4k, deaths on NHs down by 11% in 2025: Govt

NEW DELHI: Deaths on national highways in 2025 reduced by around 11% last year — 57,482 in 2025 compared to 64,772 in 2024, road transport ministry informed the Lok Sabha on Monday, quoting the eDAR (electronic detailed accident) report.As per the written reply, UP, MP and Chhattisgarh reported a sharp decline in fatalities in accidents on NHs passing through these states. Officials said thatthe eDAR data is provisional and the exact number of fatalities would be clear by April since many succumb to injuries weeks after crashes.“However, we expect some reduction in fatalities on national highways when completely verified data is available,” said an official.The data showed that 6,973 lives were lost on highways in UP last year compared to 9,560 in 2024. Similarly, deaths on NHs in MP reduced to 2,882 in 2025 compared to 4,644 the previous year. Punjab also recorded 858 deaths on NHs last year as against 1,562 in 2024.Gujarat and Jharkhand were the only two states that reported higher deaths. In Gujarat, deaths rose from 2,192 in 2024 to 2,380 and in case of Jharkhand, fatalities rose to 1,783 in 2025 compared to 1,686 the previous year.
