Playing their maiden World Cup fixture, Madsen was central to both their batting stability and leadership, and his early exit left the debutants deflated in the field. Further clarity on his availability for the rest of the tournament is expected after medical evaluations. On the field, Scotland made full use of the disruption. Opener George Munsey led the charge with a commanding 84 off 54 balls, surviving a chance on 41 before punishing Italy’s loose bowling. He shared a 126-run opening stand with Michael Jones (37), putting Scotland firmly in control. After Munsey’s dismissal in the 14th over — Italy’s first-ever World Cup wicket — Brendon McMullen (41 not out off 18) and Michael Leask (22 not out off five) provided a brutal finish. Scotland surged to 207 for 4, the first 200-plus total of this T20 World Cup, with Leask plundering 22 runs off Thomas Draca in the final over.
