'Nava Keralam' plan gets top court nod

Steering clear of election-eve politics, SC Tuesday allowed the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF govt in Kerala to continue with its ‘Nava Keralam Citizen Response Programme’, which Kerala HC had set aside after PILs alleged that Rs 20 crore allotted to the project was meant to enable the governing alliance’s cadre to visit every house for poll campaigning, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra.Arguing Kerala govt’s appeal, senior advocate Kapil Sibal told a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi that these are issues the judiciary would not be able to adjudicate. How will court determine in which welfare scheme what amount should be spent, he asked. The bench agreed and stayed the HC order, issuing notice to the PIL petitioners and saying the govt would later have to give details of how Rs 20 crore was spent.
