VIJAYAWADA : In what seemed like a scene right out of a Bollywood movie, a bride walked out of her wedding with another man moments before tying the sacred knot — jilting her groom, leaving both families red-faced, and stunning over 500 guests — in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district. The dramatic scene unfolded at a packed function hall in a village under Mylavaram constituency in the district on Friday night when the wedding rituals were on in full swing amidst traditional music.Relatives and guests gathered around the mandapam (wedding stage) to be part of the auspicious Jeelakarra Bellam ritual, wherein the bride and the groom placed a thick paste of cumin seeds and jaggery on each other’s heads. The ritual, essential in traditional Telugu weddings, marks the beginning of a couple’s marital bond.Just as the groom could tie the mangalsutra to the bride, a young man reportedly rushed into the hall and stood near the mandapam, leaving guests confused. The bride got up from her seat and stood next to him, bringing the celebrations to an abrupt halt and plunging the venue into a deathly silence.She told the gathering that the man was her lover and that they were in a relationship for a while. She also reportedly stated that she did not wish to continue with the wedding arranged by her family.The sudden development stunned the groom and his family, while guests and villagers were left speechless. Tensions briefly escalated at the venue, with a few people confronting the young man and accusing him of deliberately disrupting the wedding. Police rushed to the spot and intervened to prevent any clash. The wedding was eventually halted.The groom’s parents said that they had spent nearly ₹20 lakh on the grand arrangements, and had invited scores of relatives and villagers too. Although no police case was registered, the village elders held a meeting with both families on Saturday to resolve the issue.The bride’s parents have agreed to pay part of the wedding expenses to the groom’s family, sources said.
