The picture could not become any clearer: the San Francisco 49ers recently brought in Tampa Bay Buccaneers legendary wide receiver Mike Evans to take up the role of WR1 for their young quarterback, Brock Purdy. This leaves their long-time wideout, Jauan Jennings, in a difficult spot. Because Brandon Aiyuk’s departure and Deebo Samuel’s 2025 offseason trade [to Washington Commanders] had made him the primary wide receiver. But now that Evans would take up Jennings’ role and the fact that Jennings is an unrestricted free agent, the Niners are expected to lose him. He may be offered a WR2 elsewhere. But would that make him happy? After spending six seasons with a franchise, would he leave them for another? Potential landing spots have already emerged, with the tallest of them all slated to be the Tennessee Titans [despite Wan’Dale Robinson’s recent signing]. The Titans are expected to be big spenders in free agency.
Titans projected WR Jauan Jennings tried contract talks with San Francisco 49ers
As and when NFL free agency arrives, a team’s picture becomes clearer than ever. Up until now, the Niners reportedly wanted to re-sign Jennings, but then the very next moment, his role was handed over to Buccaneers WR Mike Evans. This means the team and the player may not have reached a mutually beneficial outcome in their contract talks. Even though it was not the first time they had that talk. Even before the 2025 season started, San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said that they would like to keep Jennings for 2025 and beyond. But then they only added $3M in play-time incentives to his 2025 contract. 2025 was his final season of the 2-year contract he signed in 2024. Because of the incentives, his pay shot to $10.5M. However, beyond that, they did not come to a long-term agreement. The same scenario may have been magnified in the 2026 offseason. They may not have reached an agreement for a long-term collaboration, and so they brought in a new wide receiver, who’s an established veteran in Tampa Bay. This may undermine Jennings’ stance. And he is now free to sign with another franchise.
Jauan Jennings is the best free agent available
The Tennessean’s Ricky Rogers ranks Jennings at No. 18 out of 51 for the Titans as the best free agent available. Reasons? “Another local kid. Another No. 2 wide receiver option. He helps the team for the right price,” [they may have Wan’Dale Robinson for WR1].According to Spotrac, the 28-year-old wideout is projected to sign a three-year contract worth $67M, giving him an average annual salary of $22.6M. Spotrac compared him to Denver Broncos’ Courtland Sutton, Cleveland Browns’ Jerry Jeudy, Jacksonville Jaguars’ Jakobi Myers, and Tennessee Titans’ Calvin Ridley.
Niners WR Jauan Jennings for Tennessee
FOX Sports’ Ben Arthur projects Jennings for Tennessee. Playing for the Titans would be like a true homecoming for the wideout. He is a Cowan, Tennessee native, who attended high school just 30 minutes away from Nashville and played collegiate football at the University of Tennessee [Tennessee Volunteers]. Also, no-longer-a-rookie Cam Ward needs a quality veteran receiver on the gridiron. Over two seasons with the Niners, the veteran receiver has accumulated 1,618 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. WR1 could be New York Giants receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and WR2 could be Jennings? Remains to be seen…
