SC adjourns hearing against Wangchuk's detention again

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on a plea challenging the preventive detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to March 17. The petition filed by his wife has been listed 24 times over the last five months, but the hearing has remained inconclusive. The activist was taken under preventive detention on Sep 26 amid violence in Lad-akh. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo immediately moved SC, which took up her case for the first time on Oct 6 last year, issuing a notice on her petition.A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P B Varale said it would not be adjourned on the next date of hearing and govt would be allowed to respond to only those aspects of the case that had not been dealt with. The bench made it clear it would wrap up the hearing and reserve its verdict on that day. The court deferred the hearing as it had not watched videos of the speech that was the basis for detaining the activist. Additional solicitor general K M Nataraj also told the bench that solicitor general Tushar Mehta, who is to argue for Centre, was not well. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Angmo, said the delay sent a “wrong signal” across the country.
