Elon Musk has a message for parents on ChatGPT, says: Keep ChatGPT ...

Elon Musk and Sam Altman’s fight over safety of AI chatbots has intensified lately. In his public criticism of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Musk claims that the chatbot is unsafe and linked to multiple user deaths. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Musk wrote, “Keep ChatGPT away from kids and the mentally unwell.” Tesla CEO said this quoting a post from X user Hernan Cortes that said, “The trans school shooter at Tumbler Ridge laid out an elaborate plan to commit mass murder at ChatGPT. A dozen employees saw the plans and wanted to alert police but were turned down by company leadership. Why?”Last month, in one of Canada’s deadliest school shootings in decades, a shooter killed six people and wounded dozens more at a high school in the tiny mountain town of Tumbler Ridge. The shooter Van Rootselaar, who killed herself, was a former student of the school. The Wall Street Journal reported that Van Rootselaar’s conversations with the chatbot “described scenarios involving gun violence over the course of several days”, and that these messages were “flagged by an automated review system”. At that time, about a dozen OpenAI employees reportedly debated turning the chatlogs over to the law enforcement. A spokeswoman for OpenAI confirmed that the company had banned Van Rootselaar’s account but stated that it determined that her activity didn’t meet the criteria for reporting to law enforcement.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman fight over ChatGPT and Tesla safety record

Earlier this year, Elon Musk reposted a claim that ChatGPT has been linked to several deaths by suicide. This angered OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who responded with a statement attacking Elon Musk’s companies — xAI (Grok to be precise) and Tesla. Musk reposted a claim from popular X user DogeDesigner that said, “ChatGPT has now been linked to 9 deaths tied to its use, and in 5 cases its interactions are alleged to have led to death by suicide, including teens and adults.” He paired it with a public call to stay away from the chatbot, writing, “Don’t let your loved ones use ChatGPT.”Just Hours later, Altman responded, calling the situation tragic and complicated at the same time slamming Grok, which has been under fire for generating nonconsensual sexual imagery, as well as Tesla’s Autopilot feature. “Apparently more than 50 people have died from crashes related to Autopilot. I only ever rode in a car using it once, some time ago, but my first thought was that it was far from a safe thing for Tesla to have released,” wrote Altman. He added, “I won’t even start on some of the Grok decisions.”

OpenAI sued by family of Canada mass shooting victim

The mother of a girl, named Maya Gebala, injured after the fatal school shooting last month in Canada has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for its decision not to inform police of the suspect’s interactions with its ChatGPT chatbot. The notice of civil claim is filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. The notice of claim alleges that the suspect identified by police, Jesse Van Rootselaar, “relied on and perceived” ChatGPT to be a collaborator and confidante in interactions ahead of the February 10 shooting. “ChatGPT equipped the shooter with information, guidance, and assistance to plan a mass casualty event,” according to the claim.

What OpenAI said on mass shooting

Late last month, OpenAI said that its current security protocols would have compelled the company to notify Canadian police about Van Rootselaar’s account. It said it implemented various policy changes “several months ago,” including consulting “mental health, behavioral, and law enforcement experts” to identify when chatbot conversations amount to a credible risk.Asked about the lawsuit, OpenAI told AFP: “What happened in Tumbler Ridge was an unspeakable tragedy.” “OpenAI remains committed to working with government and law enforcement officials to make meaningful changes that help prevent tragedies like this in the future,” a company spokesperson said in a statement
