Railways fines IRCTC Rs 10L for poor food quality

NEW DELHI: In a rare move, the Railway Board on Wednesday imposed a penalty on its own PSU – Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) – following a poor food quality complaint raised by a Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat passenger last week. While IRCTC was fined Rs 10 lakh, another Rs 50 lakh was imposed on the catering contractor. The Board also directed IRCTC to terminate its contract with Krishna Enterprises. The PSU will carry out a investigation and submit a report to the railways.Though this is not the first instance of the railways penalising IRCTC, officials said the action is intended to be a strong message to the PSU that it will be held accountable for poor food quality. “IRCTC is a service provider and cannot simply wash its hands of its responsibilities by imposing penalties on catering contractors it has engaged.
