For one hour, non-essential lights were turned off in 28 buildings and several neighbourhoods, while essential lighting needed for safety remained operational, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The idea behind the initiative is to raise awareness about energy conservation and environmental protection. By involving neighbourhoods and public buildings, authorities aim to encourage people to take part in sustainability efforts and adopt more responsible energy use.Officials said the campaign also supports broader environmental goals by improving quality of life and promoting a greener urban landscape. It reflects the municipality’s commitment to contributing to the Kingdom’s sustainable future. The initiative comes around the time of Saudi Green Initiative Day, observed every year on March 27, which encourages activities such as planting trees in parks, gardens and public spaces to strengthen environmental awareness.
