Udaipur shocker: Woman, mother-in-law burnt alive after dispute; bodies sent for post-mortem

UDAIPUR: A woman and her mother-in-law were burned alive in Udaipur’s Jindoli village late Thursday night after the woman set herself on fire following an argument with her husband. The fire spread rapidly, trapping both inside the room. The incident occurred around 10.30 pm in the Badgaon police station area. SHO Pooran Singh Rajpurohit said Mangi Gameti (35) had a dispute with her husband, Gopilal Gameti, over a domestic issue. The quarrel lasted for about half an hour, during which her mother-in-law, Pappa Bai (65), tried to mediate but failed to calm them.

“In anger, Mangi went into a room in the courtyard, poured diesel on herself, and set herself ablaze,” Rajpurohit said. Pappa Bai rushed in to rescue her but was also engulfed by the flames. The room contained fodder and other inflammable items, which caused the fire to spread quickly. Neighbours rushed to help after Gopilal raised the alarm. They attempted to douse the fire by pouring water from a distance, but the intense heat and fodder-fuelled flames prevented them from entering the room. By the time the fire brigade and civil defence teams arrived, the blaze had consumed much of the room. It took about half an hour to bring it under control. The charred remains of the two women were recovered from a corner of the room, with only their skeletons and anklets identifiable. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and police are investigating the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
