'Will not give land to occupier': Zelenskyy issues warning, rules out ceding Ukraine territory to Russia

As US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are set to hold talks on August 15, Volodymyr Zelensky warned that “decisions without Ukraine” would not bring peace and ruled out ceding territory to Moscow.“Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” he said on social media after a WSJ report said that Putin is prepared to agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine and Nato withdraw from eastern Ukraine. According to WSJ, Putin is demanding four provinces – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, but Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine will not end the war in exchange for its territory. “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question already is in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from this—and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” he said. This statement came after the announcement of Trump and Putin’s upcoming summit next week in Alaska to discuss peace in Ukraine.“Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the war “cannot be ended without us, without Ukraine”.“Ukraine is ready for real decisions that can bring peace. Any decisions that are against us, any decisions that are without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not achieve anything. These are stillborn decisions. They are unworkable decisions. And we all need real and genuine peace. Peace that people will respect,” he wrote in a series of posts on X. Zelesnkyy further raised the issue with the venue of the Trump-Putin summit, saying that it is far away from Ukraine. “President Trump announced preparations for his meeting with Putin in Alaska. Very far away from this war, which is raging on our land, against our people, and which anyway can’t be ended without us, without Ukraine,” he said. Lashing out at Putin, the Ukrainian president said that he “did not believe in our people and therefore made the hopeless decision to try to take Ukraine.” “This was his main mistake—not taking Ukrainians into account,” he added. “I believe in our people. Ukrainians are strong. Ukrainians defend what’s theirs. Many in the world have sided with Ukraine during the war. Even those who are with Russia know that Russia is doing evil,” he said. Zelesnkyy further added that the war must be brought to an end, urging Russia to do so.
