Ahmedabad man’s Rakshabandhan plan: Carries pistol to threaten sister’s husband over marital dispute; lands in police net

AHMEDABAD: Rakshabandhan is a day meant to protect the bond between siblings, but for a family from the city, it nearly became the setting for gunfire. The special operation group of the crime branch arrested a 23-year-old man and recovered a country-made pistol and eight cartridges, that he was allegedly planning to use to “confront” his brother-in-law for marrying his sister against the family’s wishes. Police said that his sister’s marriage to a man from another community in Odhav village, without the family’s consent, had left him seething. “He felt that she had brought dishonour to the family and decided to take matters into his own hands and threaten his brother-in-law with the gun,” said police. On the day sisters traditionally tie rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, the youth was allegedly preparing to wrap his fingers around a trigger. The SOG says it acted on a timely tip-off. While on patrol, officers received information that the 23-year-old was on the move with firearms. A watch was kept, his vehicle intercepted, and a search revealed the pistol and ammunition wrapped in a plastic bag. The youth, police said, claimed that he only intended to threaten his brother-in-law. But with eight cartridges ready, investigators are not ruling out the possibility of a planned killing. According to the police, he bought the weapon and ammunition from a friend for Rs 40,000, transferring the payment online. The city crime branch registered a case under the Arms Act against Bharwad on Saturday. The complaint was registered by DCB staff Mukesh Kana. The cops are now searching for the friend to find out where he got the firearm.
