Nagpur highway tragedy: Man rides 80km with wife’s body tied to bike after fatal highway crash; police hunt for hit-and-run vehicle

NAGPUR: A man was forced to tie his wife’s body to his motorcycle and drive home after receiving no assistance following her death in a road accident on the Nagpur–Madhya Pradesh highway near Deolapar. The incident, which took place on 10 August, gained attention after a video showing the man riding with the body went viral on social media. Deolapar police in Nagpur rural were alerted about an accident on a forested stretch of the highway, but found no vehicle or person at the scene. A video later emerged showing a man riding a motorcycle with a body secured to the rear. Police attempted to stop the rider near Khumari Toll Naka, but he continued on. Through coordinated efforts by Nagpur city, rural and highway police, the rider was eventually tracked to his home. He was identified as Amit Bumra Yadav, 36, from Lonara near Nagpur, under Koradi police jurisdiction. Investigations revealed that Amit had been travelling with his wife, Gyarshi Yadav, 35, towards Karanpur, Lakhnadon in Madhya Pradesh. Between 2.30pm and 3.00pm, an unidentified vehicle struck their motorcycle near Deolapar, killing Gyarshi instantly and injuring Amit. With no help available and heavy rain, Amit tied his wife’s body to the bike and drove back to Lonara. The deceased’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and police are awaiting the report to register a case, said SP Rural Harssh A Poddar. Additional SP Anil Mhaske is also supervising the investigation.
