Himachal floods: Beas river washes away parts of Chandigarh highway; Manali-Leh road blocked

A flooded Beas river has washed away many stretches of the Chandigarh-Manali highway between Kullu and Manali and also damaged hotels and restaurants on the intervening night of August 25 and 26.The highway stretch at Bindu Dhank near Manali has completely disappeared and in Raison, a portion of the highway has been damaged. The traffic is being diverted at Raison to the link road on the left bank of the Beas river.The Manali-Leh highway has also been blocked as raging Beas river has swept away a portion of the highway at Vashisht Chowk near Manali.The flood water also entered the Green Tax Barrier and Alu Ground near Manali late Monday night, prompting the administration to vacate shops and houses. The flood water also entered Dev Lok, a popular tourist spot, near 15 Mile on the night of August 25.

At least one restaurant near Manali has also been washed away in a flooded Beas river. Former Manali MLA Govind Singh Thakur visited the affected areas near Manali on Tuesday morning.Meanwhile, Chandigarh-Manali highway also remained blocked for the third day at multiple spots near Pandoh in Mandi district forcing the commuters to spend the night in their vehicles or inside the highway tunnels. The alternate Mandi-Kamand-Kataula-Bajaura-Kullu link road also remained blocked.Many districts in the state including Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, Una, Shimla and Bilaspur, all educational institutions will remain closed on Tuesday as well amidst a red alert issued by the weather department.
