Ishita Mallik murder: How killer fled West Bengal with uncle’s help; no trace of accused yet

KRISHNANAGAR (NADIA): The Krishnanagar Police arrested Kuldeep Singh—the absconding uncle of Ishita Mallik murder accused, Deshraj Singh—from Gujarat’s Jamnagar for tampering with evidence. Kuldeep had allegedly helped Deshraj (18), who gunned down 18-year-old Mallik at her home, flee. Kuldeep, who was brought back to Krishnanagar on Sunday, is likely to be produced in a local court on Monday. On Aug 25, Deshraj had shot Mallik at point-blank range in her home before fleeing. Deshraj and Ishita were classmates in Kanchrapara Kendriya Vidyalaya. They were in a relationship before Ishita chose to end it. Deshraj allegedly also threatened to gun down Ishita’s mother and younger brother, who were in the home in Manikpara, opposite Krishnanagar Women’s College. According to police, Deshraj was in constant touch over the telephone with Kuldeep after the murder. “We suspect Kuldeep is aware of where Deshraj is hiding,” an officer said. Investigators suspect the firearm used in the crime was sourced from Uttar Pradesh. Police sources said Deshraj’s other uncles were known to be local toughs in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. Deshraj lived with his mother and sister in a rented house in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas. His father is a BSF jawan. Krishnanagar police have even gone to Uttar Pradesh in search of him. A search was conducted near Deoria city, but Deshraj has not yet been found. Police suspect that after the incident, Deshraj fled to his family home in Deoria. The searches conducted by four teams of 15 members from the Krishnanagar police district over the past few days have yielded no results. Police have issued a lookout circular.
