Chennai drug bust: Bollywood actor held with 3.5kg cocaine; haul worth Rs 35cr

CHENNAI: A Bollywood supporting actor was allegedly held with 3.5kg of cocaine, worth 35 crore in the international market, in a joint operation by Chennai Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday.Acting on special intelligence, the air intelligence unit of the customs intercepted the actor (name withheld by the investigation agencies), who acted in small roles in movies such as Student of the Year, when he arrived from Singapore in the early hours of Sunday. His checked-in luggage was examined, and officials found plastic pouches containing a white powdery substance concealed in the false bottom of his trolley. A field drug test confirmed it to be cocaine. The actor was detained, and during interrogation, it was revealed that he flew from Cambodia to Chennai via Singapore. Sources said the actor claimed he was handed the trolley in Cambodia by unknown persons to hand it over to a receiver at Chennai airport. However, officials believe that he was about to carry it to Mumbai or Delhi for the cartels operating from those cities. While the DRI is tracking the drug network that engaged him, customs are investigating his travel history to ascertain if he had smuggled drugs in the past. This is the second seizure of cocaine by the DRI at Chennai airport in the past two weeks. A Kenyan national was arrested with 2kg of cocaine on Sept 16 when he arrived from Ethiopia. On Sept 1, Chennai Customs seized 5.6kg of cocaine concealed inside Ferrero Rocher chocolate cans and arrested two passengers who arrived from Ethiopia.
