Pothole pangs: Bengaluru college student run over by truck; residents flag bad roads

BENGALURU: Yet another death on city roads, and yet again the issue of potholes is front and centre.A 20-year-old student died on her way to college, after she was run over by a speeding truck near Budigere Cross on Monday. Dhanushree, the victim, a resident of Virgonagar, was a second-year BCom student at a private college in KR Pura. Though police are yet to determine whether potholes had a role in the accident, according to one resident of Bhuvaneshwari Layout, where the victim used to stay, Dhanushree was flung off her two-wheeler while negotiating a pothole, when she was run over by a speeding concrete-mixer vehicle. Police said Dhanushree, survived by her mother and two sisters, was riding a scooter around 8.30 am, when a speeding truck hit her from behind, just a few metres away from Bhuvaneshwari Enclave. As Dhanushree was flung right in the middle of the road, she came under the wheels of the truck that ran over her head. Following the accident, the truck driver fled the spot. Some passersby, who saw Dhanushree’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and moved the body to the mortuary. A senior police officer later said: “We were unable to trace the eyewitnesses, so we don’t know exactly which truck was involved in the accident. We are still analysing CCTV footage of the surrounding areas for further clues.” The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. Based on a complaint filed by Dhanushree’s mother, a single parent, a case has been registered against the truck driver under BNS Section 106 (causing death due to negligence). Cops claimed the victim’s mother did not blame the civic authorities in her complaint. “During a spot visit, we found the road in good condition in the direction in which Dhanushree was headed. However, the lane in the opposite direction was in a very bad shape. We are trying to verify if she was negotiating a pothole when the accident happened,” a police officer said. Some of the residents who had gathered at the spot blamed the road condition for the accident. Bhuvaneshwari Enclave Welfare Association president Murali A said: “Dhanushree was my neighbour. She was a very bright student. The road has been in very bad condition for many years now. It got worse last year. Moreover, there are no streetlights on that stretch.” The Mahadevapura Task Force, a volunteer group, blamed lack of funding for PWD to fill up potholes. Condoling the incident, Manjula Limbavali, the Mahadevapura MLA, said she would discuss the issue with the state govt. She claimed the govt was issuing funds for road repair only within GBA limits. For the record, Mahadevapura has GBA as well as RDPR and PWD roads.
