Haryana: IPS officer Y Puran Kumar dies by suicide; note missing, police scramble for answers

GURGAON: In a shocking incident, senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, holding the rank of additional director general of police (ADGP), allegedly died by suicide at his official residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 on Tuesday.According to preliminary information, Kumar reportedly shot himself at his government accommodation. The Chandigarh Police rushed to the spot after receiving the information and have cordoned off the area. The weapon used in the incident has been recovered, and forensic teams are conducting on-site examination.The reason behind the suicide is not yet known. “An inquiry has been initiated. We are collecting evidence and recording statements of family members and staff. The cause of the incident will be determined after further investigation,” a senior police officer said.Kumar’s wife, Amneet P Kumar — a senior IAS officer — is currently in Japan as part of an official delegation led by Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.Y Puran Kumar, a senior IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, had been recently transferred on September 29 to Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail. The facility is notable for housing Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a sentence in cases of sexual assault and other offences.Kumar’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the police fraternity. Several senior officials from the Haryana Police and Chandigarh administration rushed to his residence as news of the incident spread.Authorities are also examining whether recent professional developments or personal reasons may have contributed to the tragic step.The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a detailed report is awaited. Police said a suicide note has not yet been recovered from the scene.Further investigation is underway.
