Coldrif tragedy: After TOI report, Madhya Pradesh recognises 2 more deaths as tied to syrup

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh deputy CM and health minister Rajendra Shukla on Wednesday visited the homes of two-year-old Nihal Dhurvey and four-year-old Kabir Yadav in Betul district, whose families said they died of renal failure after taking Coldrif cough syrup.TOI had reported how the boys’ fathers had been pleading with officials to acknowledge that their sons’ deaths were linked to the adulterated syrup. The two names now feature in the list of cough syrup-linked fatalities, and Shukla said their families would receive Rs 4 lakh each in compensation, as announced by the government. Nihal died on Oct 1 and Kabir on Sept 9 after being taken to hospitals across Betul, Chhindwara, Bhopal and Nagpur. “The health minister announced that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be given. But will this bring my child back? I urged the minister for strict action against the accused. He assured us that the entire government machinery is working to ensure that the guilty are not spared,” Nihal’s father Nilkesh Dhurvey told TOI.
