3 bikers on Murthal outing die in Delhi flyover crash

NEW DELHI: Speed. No helmets. Damaged road. It proved a dangerous mix for three friends whose late-night ride back from a Murthal dinner outing ended in their death on the Libaspur flyover along GT Road early Wednesday.Their Bullet motorcycle slammed into a concrete barrier on the flyover in north Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar around 1.30am while returning from the popular highway food stop, police said. Police found the damaged motorcycle against a jersey barrier and the three riders lying nearby. “All three appeared to be dead at the spot. The victims – Sumit (27), Mohit (26) and Anurag (23) of Nangloi – were taken to the govt hospital in Burari, where they were declared brought dead. Police said none of them had been wearing helmets. Police said the bike appeared to be travelling at high speed when the rider lost control and hit the barrier. The impact threw the men several feet onto a section of road under construction. A part of the bike caught fire. “The machine bore burn marks on one side,” said an officer. “We’re checking if a fuel leak or mechanical fault played a role, but it’s clear the bike was speeding.” There were no eyewitnesses,” said a senior officer. An officer said the Libaspur stretch has been under repair since the rains left part of the road uneven. Concrete barriers, cones, and warning signs have been in place for months.CCTV footage from the cameras on the route is being scanned to assess if any other vehicle was also involved in the collision. A local resident said visibility on that stretch is poor at night, worsened by pollution and smog.Police have registered a case under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (death due to negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
