'Don’t speak of it in society’: Inside 'secrecy', 'strain' before industrialist’s Bahu death in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A woman married into an industrialist’s family in Delhi has been found dead at her Vasant Vihar home, with a police FIR detailing years of alleged abuse, intimidation and pressure to remain silent. Her mother has now called for a CBI inquiry into the circumstances of her death. The turning point, according to the family, came a month after the child’s birth, when the woman “allegedly found evidence of her husband’s affair, prompting her parents to bring her and her infant son back to Howrah.” A year later, the in-laws travelled to her parental home, “urging the family not to ‘speak of the matter in society’ and promising to take care of her.” She eventually returned to Delhi with a written assurance that her husband would stop all violence, the FIR states. The complaint paints a picture of sustained mistreatment. The woman was reportedly “isolated from social events and subjected to prolonged mental and physical abuse,” according to the FIR. Her mother alleged that the abuse began early in the marriage and intensified over the years. One episode described in the FIR dates back to February–March 2011, when the husband and mother-in-law allegedly dragged her from the first floor of the family home and assaulted her while she was pregnant. Relatives from Howrah later intervened, and the in-laws apologised, promising the incident would not be repeated. But the mother claims the abuse resumed two to three years later.Phone access was reportedly restricted, with the husband keeping “multiple locks” on his device. In April 2024, she is said to have again accessed his phone while he was abroad and found obscene content, leading to a confrontation. On 25 November, the woman called her mother around 7.30am, saying she had quarrelled with her husband over their son’s mobile phone. Subsequent calls from the family went unanswered. The mother-in-law reportedly said she was at the airport; the husband told them he was returning from the gym. Around noon, the family received a call informing them that she had been taken to hospital and had died. Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide. When TOI contacted the family’s lawyer, there was no response.
