First-day jitters in Bihar assembly: JD(U)’s Vibha Devi fumbles reading oath; Nawada winner seeks help on House floor

PATNA: JD(U)’s newly elected MLA Vibha Devi struggled to read out her oath during the first session of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha on Monday. Devi, who won from the Nawada constituency and is the wife of former MLA Raj Ballabh Yadav, paused midway and sought help from a fellow legislator to dictate the lines to her, according to news agency ANI.The inaugural session saw the presence of chief minister Nitish Kumar, his deputies Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with all newly elected MLAs.Devi defeated RJD’s Kaushal Yadav in Nawada by a comfortable margin of 27,594 votes. Speaking to the media, JD(U)’s MLA-elect Vinay Kumar Chaudhary said, “We work for the public and will continue to do so.”LJP (Ram Vilas) MLA Vishnu Deo Paswan said his priority would be generating jobs within the state. “I want to create employment so that Bihar’s youth are not forced to migrate. Politics has held Bihar back from the development it deserved,” he said.Proceedings began with an address by Protem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav, after which the oath-taking ceremony was conducted—starting with ministers, followed by the Leader of Opposition, and then the rest of the MLAs.The NDA registered a sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats—its second time crossing the 200-seat mark. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, followed by JD(U) with 85. LJPRV won 19 seats, HAMS secured five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha took four.On the opposition side, RJD finished with 25 seats and Congress with six. CPI(ML)(L) won two constituencies, while IIP and CPI(M) secured one each. AIMIM won five seats, and the BSP bagged one.
