Micron is pulling the plug on Crucial, its consumer memory brand, ending 29 years of selling RAM and SSDs to PC enthusiasts and gamers. The company announced Wednesday it will cease all consumer product shipments by February 2026, choosing instead to funnel every available chip toward AI data centers willing to pay premium prices.The move eliminates one of the most trusted names in do-it-yourself PC upgrades just as memory prices have exploded. A standard 32GB DDR5 RAM kit that cost $82 in August now sells for $310—nearly quadruple the price—and industry experts warn shortages could last until 2028.

AI boom squeezes out everyday computer users

Micron’s exit leaves Samsung and SK Hynix controlling roughly 70% of the consumer DRAM market, with both companies also prioritizing enterprise customers over retail buyers. The supply crunch has already forced Framework to stop selling standalone laptop memory to prevent scalping, while CyberPowerPC announced mandatory price hikes starting December 7.“Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments,” said Sumit Sadana, the company’s chief business officer.
