Would not shock..., says Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff when asked if he’s planning to rename the company 'Agentforce'
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is considering renaming the company ‘Agentforce’ to highlight its AI focus. Products like ‘Sales’ are already being rebranded as ‘Agentforce Sales’. This strategic shift away from ‘cloud’ terminology is driven by customer demand for AI agents, as revealed in recent focus groups.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff may rename the company to Agentforce. The chief executive of the software company reportedly said that he would not be surprised if changing the official corporate name to “Agentforce” were to happen. An employee of the company had also addressed a possible name change earlier, at least partially in jest. However, during a recent interview with Business Insider, Benioff verified that it was a real option. “It might,” Benioff said upon being asked about the possibility. “That would not shock me.”The company has already begun rebranding many of its offerings under the “Agentforce” name to make its AI software emphasis clear. In its most recent earnings update, the company said that its offering, for instance, like “Sales,” is now “Agentforce Sales,” and “Service” is now “Agentforce Service.” The move comes after a push to move beyond talking mainly about the cloud and to emphasise AI capabilities.

How Salesforce customers may be behind the possible name change

Salesforce was founded as a cloud company, so many of its products include the word “cloud,” such as Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Data Cloud. But according to Benioff, customers no longer want to hear about the cloud. He said he learned that from recent focus groups before the Dreamforce conference in October. Now, clients mainly want to talk about AI agents.“I dropped the word cloud totally. I did it at Dreamforce. Did you notice I never used it in the keynote? We learned in focus groups that customers don’t talk about cloud anymore. They just want to talk about their agentic interface,” Benioff explained.Part of that move includes the renaming of Data Cloud to “Data 360”, which was announced during Dreamforce. Data 360 is critical to Salesforce’s 2026 strategy, as Benioff mentioned in the interview.Salesforce now heavily focuses on AI agents. Some employees are unsure whether this direction will work; however, the latest earnings report gave reason for optimism when it showed encouraging results, and the company increased its revenue outlook. It’s not an outlier: Aside from Salesforce, other companies have similarly changed names as they pivoted toward new technologies or business directions. Mark Zuckerberg renamed Facebook to Meta; Google’s founders renamed its parent company Alphabet, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey renamed Square to Block.
