Gurgaon bizman killed in hit-and-run: 22-year-old driver, without license arrested

GURGAON: The car involved in the hit-and-run accident that killed a 58-year-old cyclist on Akashneem Marg at DLF-2 earlier this week was being driven by a man who didn’t have a driving licence. Amitabh Jain, husband of a Parliament museum official, was cycling on one side of the empty internal road around 7am on Wednesday when the Santro hit him from behind as CCTV footage later showed, despite the road having adequate space for the car to pass at a safe distance from Jain. Sahil, the driver of the car, was arrested late on Thursday night. Police said Sahil is a housekeeping staffer at MGF Mall and took a bouncer’s car for a spin. The 22-year-old from Jharkhand convinced the bouncer, who is also employed at MGF Mall and living in Fatehpur Beri, to let him use his car when he was asked to fetch a pack of cigarettes, a police officer said. After buying the cigarettes, Sahil took a detour and entered DLF-2 assuming the lanes would be empty at that early hour. While speeding along Akashneem Marg, Sahil failed to slow down near a speed breaker, striking Jain from behind and dragging him several meters before fleeing the spot. CCTV footage showed the Santro fleeing the area after the incident. Jain, a resident of Bougainvillea Marg and a former chemist shop owner in Delhi’s Malka Ganj, was rushed to Max Hospital by passersby with severe internal injuries soon after the accident. He succumbed to his injuries around 9am. His wife is a senior conservator at Parliament Museum, and their children work in London and Bengaluru. Relatives said Jain cycled every morning and had recently returned from a bike trip to Jaipur. Upon returning to the mall, Sahil lied when the bouncer quizzed him about the dent in the car, saying a cyclist had brushed against the vehicle and nothing else had happened. Sahil is living in a rented flat in Faridabad. His claim began to unravel once police analysed CCTV footage from multiple cameras across DLF-2, tracking the car’s movements before and after the incident. A police team visited the bouncer’s home in Fatehpur Beri on Thursday afternoon, but he was not there. Cops then went to MGF Mall where he works to interrogate him. He told investigators that Sahil had taken his car for a ride on Wednesday morning. An FIR has been registered against Sahil under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (causing death by negligence), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 324(2) (mischief) at DLF-2 police station.
