NEW DELHI: Six people were killed on Sunday after a car plunged into a 600-foot-deep gorge at Saptashring Garh Ghat in Kalwan taluka of Maharashtra’s Nashik district, police said.The victims died on the spot after their Toyota Innova, carrying seven passengers, suffered extensive damage in the crash.The accident occurred around 4 pm. All six victims were residents of Pimpalgaon Baswant in Niphad taluka.Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately with the deployment of teams from the police and the district disaster management committee. Nashik Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil is overseeing the rescue efforts at the site.Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Nashik, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon,” he said.Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the incident “extremely tragic” and announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased from the state government. He said the administration is extending full support.
