Back from Bangladesh, Sunali delivers boy at Bengal hospital

KOLKATA/RAMPURHAT: Sunali Khatun, the pregnant Birbhum woman who was banished to Bangladesh as an illegal immigrant and forced to spend six months in a jail, gave birth to a son on Monday at a state-run hospital in Bengal. “For us, this is nothing short of a miracle. The child was born healthy despite Sunali being in jail for over 100 days in an advanced state of pregnancy,” her brother Suraj told TOI.Sunali went into labour at her Paikar home late Sunday and was moved to hospital, where doctors decided on a C-section birth. The 26-year-old was escorted back to India on Dec 6 along with her son Shabir (8) after SC intervened “on humanitarian grounds”. Her husband Danish Sk and three others await an order for their repatriation from Bangladesh, where they were jailed in June.Sunali wants CM Mamata Banerjee to name her son, her mother Jyotsna Bibi said. Mamata, who was at Kapil Muni temple in Gangasagar on Monday, asked officials to convey her best wishes and send some sweets on her behalf.
